FreshPick??: Kanye West – Heartless (CDQ Snippet)

Sounded better live (de ja vu). I won’t be waiting on the release of this one anytime soon. What the hell is going on? This is probably one of the wackest beats I’ve heard in a minute (maybe the melody changes later in the song??). Damn ‘Ye, I expected this from Soulja Boy, but not you…(sigh)

Love Lockdown – New Version or Brilliant Marketing Strategy?

As I mentioned earlier this week, Kanye has decided to put out a new version of Love Lockdown due to his fan’s responses. By the way, I hate the new version but that’s not what I’m here to talk about. I thought for a second to myself and said “self, is there a deeper meaning as to why Mr. West did this?” And me being the intelligent college drop out that I am, does think that Kanye did this purposely.

Maybe you guys aren’t familiar with the marketing model of the ‘remix my song contest’ and win a prize,  but everyone from Timbaland to Erykah Badu has sponsored these sort of contests for publicity/marketing. A couple of weeks ago, I was over at Derek Sivers blog reading up on some great information that every artist/musician should read. One of his articles in particular was about ‘reversible business models‘. By now you nerds are wondering where the hell the connection is. Well here it is….(first of all, read that Derek Sivers article) Kanye performs Love Lockdown at the VMA’s (of course after he says he will never perform there again). Anticipation is built around this great performance, everyone is dying for the audio and its release on iTunes. Instead of releasing a completed version….’Ye releases a version which was incomplete and as a free download. FREE download…..his fans are ecstatic and excited to listen until they realize that it’s nowhere close to what they heard on MTV. His fans gave specific feedback on why they felt the song could’ve been better and low and behold, Kanye releases the final version based off of his fan’s responses. The result: fans are now a bit more satisfied and felt that they had a part in creating a finished version of a Kanye West song.

Brilliant move on behalf of Mr. West……I hate the new version but I’m not mad at this man’s business sense. Like I said earlier, check Derek Siver’s post and as well the LA Times agrees with me.

Well nerds….I’m done ranting. Click here for new version

Kanye Is For The People

Well nerds….it looks like Ye has succumbed to the whiney fans and is re-recording his hook. Here is what Mr. West had to say over at his blog:

Your prayers have been answered!! There’s a new version of love Love Lockdown coming. We used new taiko drums and I re-sung it… it’s being Mastered now….

Sidebar… if you don’t like autotune… too bad cause I love it and have been using it since the College Dropout!!!

FreshPick: Kanye West – Love Lockdown (Final Version)

I’m not sure how to start this….well first of all I’m sure you all see that I have given this a FreshPick which tells you that I’m feeling it. But the road to this decision my friends was a tough one. Upon first listen, I refused to believe that this was the official version and not the demo. Once I did realize that this is the final, I listened from a different perspective. And here is my stance…..from what I’ve been reading so far on various other blogs, people are a bit let down from what we heard on the MTV VMA live version. But I give ‘Ye respect from an artistic point of view. Anybody else in his position would’ve been scared to take a risk like this except for very few artists/groups. And those few have become successful (see Outkast). It seems in hip hop we tend to box artists in and the minute a line is crossed we get all fed up and angry. I think this is what hip hop needs….EXPANSION. Without it, Nas is right (Hip Hop is dead). C’mon people lets take a second and think before we bash. I know its autotuned out, but at least he flipped it a bit. So hats off to Kanye for taking the risk and putting his neck on the line for hip hop (maybe it’s the Radiohead fan in me). Get at me if ya’ll disagree or agree….

Kanye Moment #2: “George Bush Doesn’t Care About Black People”

This is just as good as it gets folks. I remember watching this as it happened live and I recall being more shocked than Mike Meyers (classic look on his face).
