*Favorite quote from sushi chef dude, Jiro - "I'll continue to climb trying to reach the top...but no one knows where the top is!"

You're probably wondering why I'd post a trailer to a documentary on the greatest sushi chef in the world. Well reason #1, I love sushi (fun fact) and reason #2, this dude is the GREATEST sushi chef in the world. Let me say it again, the GREATEST sushi chef in the WORLD. By the way, he's 85 years old.

*Favorite quote from sushi chef dude, Jiro – “I’ll continue to climb trying to reach the top…but no one knows where the top is!”

You’re probably wondering why I’d post a trailer to a documentary on the greatest sushi chef in the world. Well reason #1, I love sushi (fun fact) and reason #2, this dude is the GREATEST sushi chef in the world. Let me say it again, the GREATEST sushi chef in the WORLD. By the way, he’s 85 years old.

If you read this blog, you’re more than likely a creative. I think as creatives in this day and age, we lose track of our craft and pushing to be the BEST within it whether it be cooking (no Lil B), producing, singing, rapping, painting….whatever. We tend to get caught up in social media and all of the other time wasters that technology has brought us.

Can you name the greatest MC in the world right now? It’d be a never ending argument as there is no clear cut answer to that question. And that may be a problem. Maybe we’re not paying close enough attention to our crafts and too much attention to everything else around it. Maybe we’re starting to forget the very reason why we got involved in the first place. Or maybe it’s not possible for everyone to strive to be the best because then there wouldn’t be that special few that are acknowledged as the best. Everyone can’t be the best right? But if you fall short of best, at least you’d end up in the ‘awesome as f*ck’ arena.

Just thinking out loud….

Today's lesson...how not to promote on Twitter. First off I must say that I am an unknown indie producer myself so I know what its like trying to get heard when there is so much noise going on. Second....I must say, I don't like to put folks on blast but when this happens over and over again, I figure I should reach out and help someone.

Today’s lesson…how not to promote on Twitter. First off I must say that I am an unknown indie producer myself so I know what its like trying to get heard when there is so much noise going on. Second….I must say, I don’t like to put folks on blast but when this happens over and over again, I figure I should reach out and help someone.

As you can see in the post above, someone who I have no idea who they are sent me a mixtape via Twitter @reply. No introduction, no ‘hey how are you’…..none of that. Just pretty much a download link followed by #followback. That led to the above tweet. Literally minutes later, KingKun sent me this tweet below:

Seriously?????? You gotta be kidding right? No, not kidding. I’m not a marketing guru nor claim to be but the one thing I do know about marketing is that it is built off of relationships. If I don’t know you, I’m less likely to listen to your tape. Especially without you introducing yourself or starting some sort of convo. Would you go up to someone on the street and shove your CD in their face? Wait…..don’t answer that, you probably do.

So instead of making pretend I have all the answers for you Mr. KingKun, I would like to direct you to some of the smartest digital marketers in the game (in my opinion). Feel free to follow these guys on Twitter (please don’t send them your mixtape links though) and read the articles they recommend regarding permission marketing and online promo. Thanks in advance Mr. Kun.

The realest, most true, most beautifulest post I’ve ever read from any blog. I really thought I was alone when it came to the LA promise. Derek Sivers nailed it (pause):

When I lived in Los Angeles, I noticed they have a strange speaking pattern.

Everyone speaks in future tense. (Or, more specifically, present-tense inaction, future-tense action.)

“This guy from EMI is interested and going to be presenting it to the VP.”

“We’re in talks to do a pilot for the fall.”

“I’m getting ready to work on some new material with a writer from Friends.”

Of course these are the things some people have to tell themselves to be hopeful when facing another day of challenges.

But of course nothing materializes. You never hear it mentioned again, and you politely don’t ask. (Surprising circumstances always foiled the certain event.)

I felt like wearing a t-shirt that says, “TELL ME WHEN IT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING.”

So now when I hear a future-tense sentence, my ears shut down. I’ll say “cool!” and hope it helps, but I don’t believe a word.

Try noticing this in yourself and others for a week. Are you speaking more in future tense or present tense? Are they?

- Derek Sivers

Former club bouncer and Los Angeles native Estevan Oriol got his start in the entertainment business managing tours for huge artists like “House of Pain” and “Cypress Hill” almost 20 years ago. While globe trotting with them he began his photography career taking flicks of the madness and glitter that surrounds international celebrities. When he was back home in L.A though, it was a much different story. He took his cues from the street life surrounding him. The singular dramatic black and white photos he produces are gripping, beautiful, and authentically menacing portraits of individuals fully immersed in L.A gang lifestyle. Blessed with a talented eye and a hood pass, he takes pictures in places armed with a camera where most tough guys would take a weapon. Offered for the first time to the public for free, in this exclusive interview from The Run Up, Estevan Oriol expresses his thoughts, methods, and views on approaching everyday with the hunger of a hustler who doesn’t know where his next meal will come from.

This video is a mandatory must see for anybody who is ambitious (or awake as I call it). Watch this once a day if you have to….I do (??).

Experience things fully, vividly, selflessly. Throw yourself into the experiencing of something: concentrate on it fully, let it totally absorb you

Life is an ongoing process of choosing between safety (out of fear and need for defense) and risk (for the sake of progress and growth): Make the growth choice a dozen times a day.

Let the self emerge. Try to shut out the external clues as to what you should think, feel, say, and so on, and let your experience enable you to say what you truly feel.

When in doubt, be honest. If you look into yourself and are honest, you will also take responsibility. Taking responsibility is self-actualizing.

Listen to your own tastes. Be prepared to be unpopular.

Use your intelligence, work to do well the things you want to do, no matter how insignificant they seem to be.

Make peak experiencing more likely: get rid of illusions and false notions. Learn what you are good at and what your potentialities are not.

Find out who you are, what you are, what you like and don’t like, what is good and what is bad for you, where you are going, what your mission is. Opening yourself up to yourself in this way means identifying defenses – and then finding the courage to give them up.

Ok, check out my dude Maleonn from Shanghai. He's a photographer that dropped everything (day job/financial security) to chase his dream (yea!). Be sure to read his inspirational interview over at Scoute. And dont forget to go into work tomorrow and quit (I am not responsible for anything that happens after that).

Top 10 tips for facing failure:

1. Failure is normal. Everyone has faced failure. Some people talk about their failures. Some people don’t talk about their failures, which makes it look like they never fail. Don’t believe it.

2. Define or refine. Failure can define you or refine you. If you quit, you have allowed failure to define you. If you keep going, learn from it and get stronger, you have used failure to refine yourself.

3. Learn from it. Every failure has something to teach us, if we will only be teachable. To be teachable, we need to ask good questions such as “What contributed to this failure?” or “What can I do differently and/or better next time?”

4. Change your definition of failure. We live in an either/or culture. Either you totally succeed or you completely fail. Many times it’s neither.

5. Redefine what failure means to you. A failure is simply evidence that you took a shot at accomplishing something, that you want to be a doer instead of just a talker.

6. Successful people fail often. How can you be successful and fail often? You become successful by taking risks. Risk implies that you might fail. Otherwise it would not be called risk-taking; it would be called sure-thing taking.

7. Build on your failures. Many of the great success stories are built on what was learned from failure or the motivation that can come from failure.

8. Don’t fear failure. The of failure holds us back from doing many of the things we would like to do.

9. Give up your belief in failure. A wise person once said, “Failure? I’ve never encountered it. I’ve just learned lots and lots of ways that don’t work, and turned that into a few successes.”

10. Never, ever give up. An ancient Japanese proverb suggests that we are to “fall down seven times, get up eight.”
