Today's lesson...how not to promote on Twitter. First off I must say that I am an unknown indie producer myself so I know what its like trying to get heard when there is so much noise going on. Second....I must say, I don't like to put folks on blast but when this happens over and over again, I figure I should reach out and help someone.

Today’s lesson…how not to promote on Twitter. First off I must say that I am an unknown indie producer myself so I know what its like trying to get heard when there is so much noise going on. Second….I must say, I don’t like to put folks on blast but when this happens over and over again, I figure I should reach out and help someone.

As you can see in the post above, someone who I have no idea who they are sent me a mixtape via Twitter @reply. No introduction, no ‘hey how are you’…..none of that. Just pretty much a download link followed by #followback. That led to the above tweet. Literally minutes later, KingKun sent me this tweet below:

Seriously?????? You gotta be kidding right? No, not kidding. I’m not a marketing guru nor claim to be but the one thing I do know about marketing is that it is built off of relationships. If I don’t know you, I’m less likely to listen to your tape. Especially without you introducing yourself or starting some sort of convo. Would you go up to someone on the street and shove your CD in their face? Wait…..don’t answer that, you probably do.

So instead of making pretend I have all the answers for you Mr. KingKun, I would like to direct you to some of the smartest digital marketers in the game (in my opinion). Feel free to follow these guys on Twitter (please don’t send them your mixtape links though) and read the articles they recommend regarding permission marketing and online promo. Thanks in advance Mr. Kun.

As I was reading my favorite blogs the last couple of days, I realized that I don’t want FreshNerd to turn into one of those faceless/machines of a blog that just pump out music with no personality at all (I stay away from those). So here’s my effort at making FreshNerd the kind of blog that not only has a voice but the type of blog that has a personality. FreshNerd is a person….I am FreshNerd. So if you don’t know me already, I figure these fun facts will help you out a bit:

1. I am __ yrs old (what? we just met, relax)

2. I’ve been kicked out of a club for being too drunk. I only remember the details my boys told me. The only thing I remember is LS-1 was dj’ing (remember him?) and the bouncer dragging me out of the bathroom (I think I fell asleep in there).

3. I don’t have the greatest short term memory. I’m not sure when this…..wait….what was I saying again?

4. I had a smurf drum set when I was 4. I think that’s the reason why I’m infatuated with drum sounds till this very day.

5. When I DJ’ed in college, DJ Demp’s crateboy tried to steal my records. Yea, I turned around and my whole crate was gone. So I wander over to their booth and I see my crate. He said he thought it was his. I got my records back.

6. I started making beats after I realized my skills on the mic…well…..sucked. Although, I had some sick rhyme patterns and metaphors.

7. Wayne Brady was supposed to fly me and my production partner at the time to Hawaii to work on his album. Yea, this was right after his Chappelle show appearance. He came to the crib and we played him beats. He picked two and we never saw him again LOL.

8. I used to practice Big Daddy Kane and his dancer’s (Scoob and Scrap Luva) dance routine after memorizing his rhymes. I had the parts in my eyebrow too……

9. I backed my car into a p0le a week after getting my trunk fixed. At that point, I just left the dent there until I sold it which was last year. Those of you that know me, know about the dent in my trunk.

10. I dropped out of college (Computer Science major) with only a year left. I think I would’ve committed suicide if I ended up being a programmer. I think its the most anti-social profession in the world. It wasn’t for me.

11. I can ride a bike backwards.

12. I once popped a wheelie (example) for over 100 feet. Thats a huge accomplishment when you’re 9 yrs old.

13. I’ve never listened to a complete Tupac album in one sitting. I’ve only heard All Eyez on Me in its completeness in several different sittings. And that album only…..

14. I played in a piano recital last year. I got crushed by a bunch of little kids ages ranging from 7-12. I did do better than this 3 yr old though…..she had nothing on me.

15. I used to be addicted to video games…..NBA Live 97 & 98 to be exact.

16. I hate Kobe Bryant. For no reason really…..not sure when it all started.

17. I played football (soccer for my U.S. readers) for over 5 years. I was nice.

18. I read a lot of books.

19. I hate movies.

20. I honestly believe I will be able to retire at 35. Now when I say retire, I don’t technically mean never work ever again. I mean only having to work if I WANT to. Financial freedom in other words…..

21. I once made pretend I was sick in the first grade so I can stay home and listen to Audio Two’s Top Billin all day. Sorry mom, sorry dad…..

22. In middle school, we would have firework battles on 4th of July. We would shoot fireworks back and forth at the kids across the lake (whatup Rob, Chico). I got hit in the neck with a bottle rocket…..ah, the good ‘ol days.

Well, if you’re still reading this far that means I’m actually more interesting than I thought. Feel free to subscribe (look over to your right) or follow me on Twitter if you found any of this remotely entertaining or if you want to make me feel better so I know someone out there reads this thing.

Whatuppers my fellow nerds….it’s been awhile. I have been having internet woes as I await the cable company to come and install internet which is why the reason for no posts as of lately (if you noticed). In the meantime, I decided to try one of those personal wi-fi dongles and needless to say….I would rather use dial up. There is an upside though. When you don’t have internet, you learn to be creative and find other ways to get your online tasks done.

Find a locked network and spend your day trying to guess the password – I haven’t had any luck with this yet, but I’m determined to guess one password before the day I die.

Hang out with people that have iPhones – Being the nerd that I am, you would figure I have one but I don’t. The thought of touch screens scare me. Plus, everyone has one of these things so why buy one?

Go to the Apple Store – free internet and use of their products. Need I say more? Just be sure to keep rotating through the different machines so the employees don’t catch on to you.

Forget technology – remember paper and pen? What happened to the good ‘ole days? Send a real letter….the recipient will be more appreciative (although you may lose the client due to slow response time)

Go to the library – Yes nerds, remember those? People actually used them B.G. (before Google). Give it a try, you’ll be surprised at what you find (or don’t find).

With that being said, the slow ass cable company will hopefully be here this week so I can get back up and running. To all those who I owe emails/responses, I haven’t flaked….the letter is in the mail.

PRESS RELEASE
Los Angeles, California, May 25, 2010

We are reaching out to get your ear for a minute about this critical situation in Arizona.

If you haven’t heard, the Arizona state legislature passed a bill (SB 1070) that was signed into law by Governor Jan Brewer that legalizes and sanctions racial profiling. Straight up.

It forces the cops to hunt down and target anyone they “reasonably suspect” that may be undocumented. And if the people they harass don’t have proof that they were born in the U.S., they can be detained and arrested. This must be stopped.

Fans of our music, our stories, our films and our words can be pulled over and harassed every day because they are brown or black, or for the way they speak, or for the music they listen to. People who are poor like some of us used to be could be forced to live in a constant state of fear while just doing what they can to find work and survive. This law opens the door for them to be shaked down, or even worse, detained and deported while just trying to travel home from school, from home to work, or when they just roll out with their friends.

Some of us grew up dealing with racial profiling, but this law (SB 1070) takes it to a whole new low. If other states follow the direction of the Arizona government, we could be headed towards a pre-civil rights era reality. This unjust law was set into motion by the same Arizona government that refused to acknowledge Martin Luther King Jr. day as a national holiday.

When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, they arrested her. As a result, people got together and said we are not going to ride the bus until they change the law. It was this courageous action that sparked the Montgomery bus boycott. What if we got together, signed a collective letter saying, “we’re not going to ride the bus”, saying we are not going to comply. We are not going to play in Arizona. We are going to boycott Arizona!

Signed,

Zack de la Rocha

Here’s a list of the courageous artists who have taken a stand for civil and human rights in this collective decision to boycott Arizona:

Cypress Hill
Juanes
Conor Oberst
Los Tigres del Norte
Rage Against the Machine
Cafe Tacvba
Micheal Moore
Kanye West
Calle 13
Joe Satriani
Serj Tankian
Rise Against
Ozomatli
Sabertooth Tiger
Massive Attack
One Day as a Lion
Street Sweeper Social Club
Spank Rock
Sonic Youth
Tenacious D

We are asking artists the world over to stand with us, and not allow our collective economic power to be used to aid and abet civil and human rights violations that will be caused by Arizona’s odious law.

Artists sign-up here: http://www.thesoundstrike.net/

Poster Boy is well known for taking subway advertisements and putting his own “spin” on them transforming billboards into art. Originally Poster Boy was to serve 210 hours of community service but it was his failure to appear in court that gave him his 11 month sentencing. What do you think?
Too harsh of a sentence?
Is the judge using him as an example to send a message to other street artists?
Was Poster Boy an idiot for skipping out on his court date?

You all know one. He may even be a family member….or co-worker. Let me start by saying there is nothing wrong with being an MC. Hell, hip hop is in dire need of them (good ones, that is). But it seems twitter has created a new breed of “MC”….an annoying one. The kind that constantly updates “at the studio, yo!” or “I’m goin’ in right now on this verse!”.

But wait, it doesn’t stop there. Said rapper will then spam the hell out of your timeline with the worse pitch known to mankind. I know you’ve seen it, it looks something like this: @yourname this shit is hot yo! I got that heat, holla at ur boi. And yes, Mr. Rapper will copy/paste this awesome pitch to everyone he is stalking…er…..I mean following.

Now I’m not here to hate on Mr. Rapper but I would like to help make Twitter a better place. So here are a few suggestions:

Follow people that already like music in the style in which you do. Don’t spam Common with links to your new single titled “Replacin Dem Hoes”. Do some research, use Twitter’s search, use Google.

Engage in conversation before spamming the hell out of me with links. Would you walk up to someone on the street and shove your CD in their face before saying “hello”? (well, you probably would)

Use services like Fairtilizer or Bandcamp. People like to hear the music without having to download first….also a plus if your link doesn’t have flashing banner ads that can cause epileptic seizures if stared at for too long.

Hopefully this helps, if not….I’m not sure what else to say. Google is your friend, anything you need to know is out there. Trust me.

If you’re a Twitter user (like myself), I’m sure you know this guy and perhaps you might even be this guy/gal. You know the dude that constantly claims he needs NO sleep and feels the need to tweet it on a bi-hourly basis along with his “grindin” tweets. Well….I hate to break it to you buddy, you’re not “grinding”. And furthermore, unless you’re a robot (in the literal sense)….you need sleep. According to Wikipedia, adults need 7-8 hrs of sleep (some even argue 6hrs is suffice). Anything less than this is considered “sleep debt”. So how does sleep debt affect our day to day activities? I’m glad you asked:

Sleep debt results in diminished abilities to perform high-level cognitive functions. Neurophysiological and functional imaging studies have demonstrated that frontal regions of the brain are particularly responsive to homeostatic sleep pressure.

When Nas spoke of not sleeping because it is the cousin of death, I’m almost positive he didn’t mean that in the literal sense. So to you Mr. No Sleep….I say STFU and stop sending me download links. I don’t know you…..go that way.

Disclaimer: If I offended anyone then that means the shoe fits…..just sayin’.

I’m sure by now you nerds have been hearing about all the hype surrounding Shyne and the crazy advance he received from LA Reid. First and foremost, I’ll be the first to admit that I used to be a Shyne fan (even when all my friends thought he was wack, I held him down *pause*). While I did think the advance was a bit too much, I wasn’t trippin’…..until I heard the music. Jesus Christ…..I’m not a hater at all but this new Shyne music I’ve been hearing is laughable. It almost doesn’t sound real….I’ve actually caught myself waiting for a DJ to come on and yell “psyche!” *with DJ Clue echo*.

I’m not here to tell you all how bad his new music is, but rather some better investments that could’ve been made. So I give you my top 5 list of rappers that could use a fresh mill (in no particular order):

1. Ab-Soul – representin’ the new West and the TDE crew, IMHO Ab is one of the sickest MC’s when it comes to wordplay, rhyme pattern, and flow. If you’re not familiar yet, please get familiar….ask Google (or here). If this kid had a milli behind him, he could build a sick fan base and help bring real rhymin’ to the forefront.

Fave line: “So I threw on my fatigue shorts and a tee that says Peace not War now everybody eyein’ me. I don’t know if I need an iron or its the irony”

2. QuEst (aka John Q) – reppin’ Florida and doesn’t sound like Trick Daddy or Plies. QuEst highlights are his flow and distinct voice. South Florida is a melting pot and I feel it’s not represented well in hip hop. I will be honest and say I’ve only heard his latest project, but that’s all I need to hear to understand the potential this kid has.

Fave line: “I blast off, you blow up….get the picture?”

3. Wax – A lot of West coast on this list…I know. But Wax is sick. Upon first glance/listen, he will get the Eminem comparisons but thats where it stops. If you listen closely, you’ll understand his lane and see that he has a unique angle, especially being from LA.

Fave line: “My music is way to unsafe for a major. They want it in a box like Digidesign, it all sounds pretty similar like Biggie and Shyne.”

4. Melo-X – Brooklyn native, Melo-X, is a triple threat (DJ/MC/Producer). Always a good look when looking to invest in an artist. Check out his Mustafa project and as well his Maxwell Remix EP. This kid has serious talent. With some dollars behind his brand, the sky would be the limit since his creativity is off the charts.

Recommended listening: Audio Foreplay

5. KnowJuander – Mc/Producer with heart felt lyrics over bangin beats. Just raw hip hop which most would consider backpack rap….but if thats what you call good hip hop then so be it. Another kid that would benefit greatly (and be a better option than Shyne) with some money for marketing, brand building.

Recommended listening: A Kid Love, beta

So I was planning to mentally block my first interview here in London, but I can’t bring myself to. It was an interview for a small art/music events company which I figured would be some fresh a$$ ish to get into. So I meet with the owner of the company at a small cafe in….let’s just say not the best part of London. Long story short (you like how I skip to the end?) it didn’t work out on either side. But my reason for this rant is not the fact that this woman wasted my time, but more about what she said to me. At one point in the interview we started talking about what kind of art I’m into (keep in mind she saw my resume before hand….or supposedly did) and she looks at me and says “Well, I know urban and street art is considered contemporary art, but I don’t consider it art at all.” Then the cherry on top was when she proceeded to say “I only deal with pretty/happy art and happy people”. Umm….what the fuck is that supposed to mean?!? Anything that’s not suburb is angry and ugly?? Maybe I’m overreacting but I took offense as if I was an urban artist myself. I guess I am in a sense but in the music world. I guess it just surprises me that people are still blatantly classist in this day and age of new money. The age where more and more inner city kids are turning into successful entrepreneurs off of art and/or music. Will it ever change? Who knows, all I know is that I want my 2 pounds 20 back that I spent on the tube transportation to the interview. She gets the gas face!!! Now pardon me as I go hang out with my ugly and angry urban friends….

Of course you did, that’s why you’re here. The original artist behind this piece is THE richest contemporary artist of our time. His name is Damien Hirst.
