My L.A. Entertainment Friends Will Appreciate This….

imsola

The realest, most true, most beautifulest post I’ve ever read from any blog. I really thought I was alone when it came to the LA promise. Derek Sivers nailed it (pause):

When I lived in Los Angeles, I noticed they have a strange speaking pattern.

Everyone speaks in future tense. (Or, more specifically, present-tense inaction, future-tense action.)

“This guy from EMI is interested and going to be presenting it to the VP.”

“We’re in talks to do a pilot for the fall.”

“I’m getting ready to work on some new material with a writer from Friends.”

Of course these are the things some people have to tell themselves to be hopeful when facing another day of challenges.

But of course nothing materializes. You never hear it mentioned again, and you politely don’t ask. (Surprising circumstances always foiled the certain event.)

I felt like wearing a t-shirt that says, “TELL ME WHEN IT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING.”

So now when I hear a future-tense sentence, my ears shut down. I’ll say “cool!” and hope it helps, but I don’t believe a word.

Try noticing this in yourself and others for a week. Are you speaking more in future tense or present tense? Are they?

- Derek Sivers

The Other Side at the Arts Pavilion, Mile End Park

other_side_pcso

Yes, that is a cop.

The ‘Other Side’ show which is on until 29th November in the Arts Pavilion, Mile End Park just a very short walk from Mile End Tube station (Central Line). During the run of the show artists have been coming in and creating works for display with some giving demonstrations of their techniques as they go along. Stik himself is also present - curating, organising and painting all day long and thanks to him the list of artists on show is growing longer by the day.

FreshPick: LaNiece McKay – Symptoms

LaNiece

LaNiece McKay delivers us  ’Songs From Her Breakup” and the wait was definitely worth it. For those of you that don’t know LaNiece, she is a talented/upcoming singer currently living in Osaka, Japan by way of L.A. The track featured here is bonkers (yea, I said bonkers) as Ms. McKay describes symptoms she is having as a result of her broken heart (get it?). I’m not sure who produced this, but the drums knock as the synths syncopate around LaNiece’s sultry vocals. Be sure to check out the rest of the album and support indie music damnit! Lates….

Fun fact: LaNiece was featured on one of my songs with cARTer that was available for a limited time as a free download (you can still find it if you look hard enough).

“This piece represents my recent exploration into the multiple identites that reside within us all. Circumstances and environment, ie. The power of context, powerfully influence our behaviours and emotional states, all of which are an accumulation of our influences and growth since childhood.” – Meggs
