In this week’s Walrus TV release, Rene Almanza discusses the secret to making his illustrations vibrant and full of life. He explains that sometimes when he starts drawing he doesn’t have a particular image in mind, rather, he starts, and when shapes start to take form, he decides where to take the drawing. His use of continuous lines helps explain the energy in his work, and he shares why he uses this technique in the interview. Monday night was the opening reception of Worlds on Fire, an art exibit/music function presented by none other than mr. black eyed peas himself….will.i.am. I completely dumbed out and forgot to register so I almost got stuck outside without making it in. Luckily, I did a good job of a) showing up early enough and b) using a mixture of my charm and Barry White voice to convince the door girl to let us in. Or maybe, she just felt sorry for me and let us in. Either way, I got in. The spot was cool (minus the fact that it was downtown L.A.) and to top it off an open bar. In between some hipster kid dancing while his parents shot a video interrupting the viewing of some dope art (don’t ask, it’s a long story), I got a chance to take some pics of what was on display.
